The American Institute of Chemists has seven different membership categories, as well as a Corporate Membership. Each category has different criteria for membership and dues amount. The categories are as follows:

Student Associate (SAIC)
Criteria: Applicant must be a fulltime college student enrolled in an accredited chemical science program. Approved by the Executive Director. Dues: $35 annually. Notes: Cannot vote in the BOD election or at National Business Meeting
Member (MAIC)
Criteria: Individual must submit the membership application and a copy of their current curriculum vitae. Approved by the Executive Director. Dues: $110 annually. Notes: For those who are starting their careers in the chemical sciences. Members can vote in the elections, be a member of the Board of Directors and vote and make motions at the National Business Meeting.
Retired Member (MAIC)
Criteria: If a Member has retired from fulltime employment, they may apply to become a Retired Member. Dues: $70 per year.
Fellow (FAIC)
Criteria:
- For individuals who have at least 10 years experience in the chemical sciences.
- Must submit the membership application and their current curriculum vitae.
- Must be approved by the Qualifications and Admissions (Q&A) Committee.
- Approval process takes between 4-6 weeks.
- For an upgrade from MAIC to FAIC, we require the difference in dues payment ($40) and a copy of their current CV.
Dues: $150 per year. Notes: Same voting and election rights as a Member.
Retired Fellow (FAIC)
Criteria: If a Fellow has retired from fulltime employment, they may apply to become a Retired Fellow. Dues: $75 annually.
Life Fellow (FAIC)
Criteria: If a fellow would like to pay a one-time fee of $1,200, they may become a Life Fellow. This entitles the Fellow to membership in the AIC for the rest of their life. Dues: One-time fee of $1,200. Notes: If they wish to receive a subscription to The Chemist, they must pay the subscription fee of $35 annually.
Honorary Fellow
Criteria: These are Fellows that are voted on by the AIC BOD. Once approved, a special certificate is designed and presented at the AIC National Meeting. Dues: No cost.
Emeritus Fellow
Criteria: Once a Fellow has retired and their age plus years of membership in the AIC equals or is greater than 85, the Fellow may apply to become an Emeritus Fellow. Dues: No cost for annual membership. Notes: If they wish to receive annual subscriptions to The Chemist, they must pay the $35 subscription fee.
